How to Extend Your Tourist Visa (Even When Migration Tells You You Can’t)

As of 2009, the official word in Ecuador is tourists of many countries (like the USA) are no longer permitted to extend their tourist visas…at least that is what they will tell you if you go to an immigration office in one of the cities of Ecuador.

When you enter the country (citizens of USA, Europe, Australia and others) you will receive an automatic, free 3 month stamped tourist visa in your passport. No need to solicit one prior to arrival.

But before 2009, tourists could renew the visa while in the country for up to 6 months in a calendar year. But in 2009, the government released a law stating that tourist visas are no longer extend-able, and that is what migration officials will tell you too.

Now, what happens if you want to stay 4, 5, 6 or more months in Ecuador?

There are a few options that I’ve listed after having talked to some abogados de inmigracion florida.

Many people simply overstay their visa and pay a fine whenever it is they leave the country. The fine is around $200-250 and after payment migration gives you 48 hours to exit the country and you will not be legally permitted to re-enter for 6 months.

If you overstay 1 day or 5 months the fine does not change in price, but it is not advisable to stay lengthy amounts of time illegal (just apply for a resident visa or launch the K1 visa process, more on this in a later article).

But most people prefer to stay legal, which is always the best choice, so the next option is also possible…

You could use a good, knowledgeable immigration lawyer like the one I know in Guayaquil that could solicit a 6 month tourist visa I2-9 you can apply for and get once in Ecuador. Las Vegas EB-5 visa attorney will deal with such a case.

In fact, if your visa has already expired you could still apply for and get this visa, having to pay the fine, but not having to leave the country (if you have a good, knowledgeable lawyer). So your total stay in Ecuador on a tourist visa would be your initial 3 months + 6 months on the new 6 month visa= Total 9 months straight in Ecuador.

Disclaimer: This is not legal advise, do what you will, this is simply helpful hints being mentioned.

How to Hire + Pay Your Maid in Ecuador

What is the biggest difference between millionaires and common folk?

Millionaires have maids, right? …Well… in Ecuador, everyone from the middle class on up has a maid!

And with retirement homes in the US costing in upwards of $3000 a month, now wonder people are starting to think about moving to Ecuador!

The weather is mild and comfortable year round, the food is natural and delicious, life is cheap, and you can even have your own personal maid for a whole month for less than you would pay in a week in a retirement home.

Finding a maid in Ecuador is not a difficult task. I recommend trying Maid2Match’s cleaning service, you won’t be disappointed. Merry Fairies is a program created here at Dazzle Co. to address the cleaning needs of people who aren’t in a position to clean their own home or to pay to have someone else clean their home. Dazzle Company has created a Brand Name of itself and a simple search string for  cleaning companies near me is most likely to bring you on our website, which is a testimony to our claims.

Finding maids in Ecuador through these means, in 2010, many are paying around $200 a month for the maid to be in-house 3-4 hours a day (part time). For a full time maid the current cost (august 2010) is around $250 per month (8 hrs a day).

As a cleaning service one of the things you will be responsible for is to make sure that you are killing germs and other microorganisms. Germs, disease causing bacteria and viruses can hide in all kinds of nooks and crevices in your buildings – everywhere from toilet seats to doorknobs. And these tiny creatures are not content to stay in one place for long. They catch rides on hands, garbage cans, and cleaning equipment and are then spread throughout the building. Knowing how disinfectants work will help you to choose a suitable disinfectant to control the microorganisms that lurk in your buildings. Here on bridge you can check about controlling microorganisms.

So how do disinfectants work? They work by oxidizing the germs, breaking down their cell walls, in other words, disrupting the physical makeup or blocking the energy-yielding or synthetic process of the germs. Because different ingredients or combinations of ingredients kill different germs, you need to select a electrostatic disinfection services that works on the specific germs you are trying to remove. If that is not possible, you should select a broad-spectrum product that works on all the germs that you might face.

There are several types of disinfectants available, but the two categories of disinfectants that a cleaning company needs to know about are:

*Quaternary disinfectants. This type of disinfectant carries a positive charge. The bacteria, viruses and fungi you are trying to remove carry a negative charge. When you clean a surface using a quaternary disinfectant, the cells of the bacteria, viruses and fungi change from a negative to positive charge, which eventually leads to its death.

Quaternary, also referred to as Quats, are typically used in low-level sanitization situations. Quaternary disinfectants are odorless, non-staining and non-corrosive to metals. They are fairly non-toxic if used in diluted concentrations.

*Phenolic disinfectants. Phenol and phenolics are the active ingredients in most bottles of common household disinfectants. Phenol is the oldest disinfectant and was originally called carbolic acid. Phenol can be corrosive to skin, so you may want to consider using disinfectants that contain phenolic, which is less corrosive.

Phenolics are very effective at sanitization and disinfection. They are also effective at destroying several types of bacteria, including the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. Phenolics are fairly expensive to use and they react with some plastic surfaces.
To make sure you are using the right disinfectant and that it is performing as it should pay attention to the following factors:

*Concentration. Mix the disinfectant to the proper dilution rate.

*Contact time. Some disinfectants need to be in contact with the germs they are trying to kill for specific amount of time. If not left long enough they cannot do their job.

*pH. Certain disinfectants work best under an acidic condition (bleach), while others work best under alkaline conditions (quats).

*Temperature. As with pH, bleach works best in cold water and quats work best with warm water.

There are a growing number of products on the market that are specifically designed to limit the spread of germs or effectively remove them from the surfaces people tend to come in contact with. How can you tell what germs a product is intended to kill? Carefully read the product’s label or product fact sheet and look for an EPA number. Commercially sold disinfectants must register their effectiveness claims with the EPA.

As disinfectants are intended to “kill” germs and other microorganisms it is important to follow label directions and plan how often to disinfectant surfaces. A disinfectant must be in contact with the germs it is intended to kill. This means you must first clean the surface so it is free of dirt, grease and oil. Then apply the disinfectant let it dwell for the recommended amount of time.

Remember, even though good cleaning removes dirt and many germs, the germs left behind will grow and spread. Using a disinfectant will help to kill the remaining bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. This will help keep your building clean and its occupants healthy.

You could also go through the local papers, (El Comercio in Quito, El Universo in Guayaquil) but you will need to know a little Spanish. You can look in the classified section in the Services section (Servicios) for maids (Empleadas) offering their services. If hiring through these means, expect to pay a little more, usually around $300-400 a month.

Paying benefits and other employment related costs is slowly becoming more and more required (More on this in articles to come, or you can inquire in the department called IESS).

For the costs stated above, the maids do all the regular household work, cleaning and cooking. If you need special attention you would probably have to pay a little more, and our best recommended suggestion would be Maid Easy for more customized/deeper clean type of services.

Having a maid is definitely one of the biggest perks to living in Ecuador, …Bienvenidos a Ecuador.
