Queso de hoja in Ecuador

A French chef once told me in the US, “Americans love cheese.” I agree, 100%. We eat cheese on everything.

Well, in Ecuador, you will NOT be disappointed! The local cheeses are exquisite. Starting with this must try when in the Andes Mountains…called Queso de Hoja.

This cheese is made in leaves of plants and eaten right out of the leaf! Delicious! Amazing! Reason enough to move to Ecuador …stay tuned in the upcoming days for more must try local foods.

The Ecuador Food Series, Part 1: Ceviche

ceviche de pescado, camaron, mixto ecuador
Doesn't get more Ecuadorian than this dish of delicious fresh seafood soup, Ceviche

This week I will be highlighting traditional (and delicious!) foods of Ecuador. The local gastronomy is a HUGE reason why I chose to live in Ecuador after traveling large parts of the world…

This soup is very traditional Ecuadorian, and it’s delicious…you can get it with fresh fish (pescado), shrimp (camaron) or both (mixto)…

It is best in the cities of Manta, Salinas and Guayaquil!

Galapagos Flight Deal (The Cheapest Ever)

galapagos islands beach

One absolute-must-visit while in Ecuador is the wonderful Galapagos Islands. The problem is that Galapagos can be quite pricey…unless you visit it how I will recommend in an upcoming article…But for now…

In September, LAN will begin to operate flights to the Galapagos, which is great news for Galapagos visitors…more airlines, more competition, lower prices for us!

In celebration of their opening, they are offering a flight deal on tickets purchased before August 16… for any departure dates between September 16 and February 2011. Price with all taxes included… $190 round-trip!

Most Galapagos flights have averaged around $400-450 round trip, (but some agencies offer the flight free if you buy a $7000 tour with them)…

Galapagos just got cheaper….stay tuned for more…Domenick

Whale Watching Season in Ecuador (Right Now!)

Whale Watching in Puerto Lopez Ecuador
Whale Watching in Puerto Lopez Ecuador

One of the coolest things to do on the Ecuador coast during the months of July and August is to go Whale Watching.

If you see whales anywhere else in the world, it’s going to cost you at least $50 (like it did for me in the Dominican Republic)…in Ecuador, it costs a mere $15-20 per person (and even less per person for groups).

The main season is July to late August, when the guides guarantee you will see whales or your money back.

Another cool thing about seeing whales in Ecuador is that unlike in other destinations, in Ecuador the boats can pull right up next to the whales and even chase after them, so you can get a real up-close-and-personal look at the mammoth sea beasts.

Yes, the whales are protected from commercial fishing in Ecuador.

The best places to see whales are Puerto Lopez and Salinas (for me).
