Tapia Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Role in September Police Riots

Big news this week in Ecuador as ex-police chief Rolando Tapia was sentenced to 3 years prison for his role in the September 30 police riots of last year.

In other news, President Correa seemed mildly pleased but noted others involved still need to be brought to justice.

What do you think, was the sentence too steep?

Uruguay vs Ecuador. Which is Best for You?

Sure. Well the cost of living in Ecuador is much cheaper than Uruguay, in Ecuador a lunch starts around $2, a bus $.25 and liveable properties start around $35k. Everything is more expensive in Uruguay but not quite as expensive as in the States.

Plus, Ecuador uses the dollar…which means you won’t get daily raped by credit card and ATM companies whenever you spend money from accounts in the States.

Quality of life is pretty subjective, but Uruguay is a pretty sterile place, depends what you’re looking for, Ecuador has more character.

Clarity of Ocean… both have Californian style beaches with golden sand and dark water, not the Caribbean prototype.

Crime rates… I’d say Uruguay is a bit, only a bit safer these days, but you could go years in Ecuador without incident. Just use taxis at night instead of walking in the big cities of Quito and Guayaquil. Exact crime rates I’m not aware of at the moment.

Ecuador has very affordable health care… please see the article I wrote here for more.

As for real estate opportunities… Ecuador is where its at, at the moment. Its closer to the US, warm year round and deals starting around $35k can still be found in desirable areas.

hope that helps… Dom

Ecuador Economy Grew 8.6% in first Trimester of 2011

During a meeting in the Mercosur, the executive secretary of the Cepal, Alicia Barcena highlighted the behavior of the Ecuador economy so far this year, increasing by 8.6%.

This doesn’t surprise me personally, Ecuador is a country on the move, most who have been here a few years can see big differences in development in certain areas.

The current government has been great building new roads and bridges which has stimulated national tourism.

Earlier this year when I was in China, I can tell you, many business in China are well aware of this growth rate and honing in on Latin America licking their chops… they know to grow their companies they have to “penetrate” emerging markets like that of Ecuador and South America.

Over the next 5-10 years the real action (and money to be made) will be in the emerging markets (Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia)… you don’t have to be the best, if you’re the first.

Approval Rates for President Correa at 76%

According to a survey of 4,231 people all over Ecuador made by the newspaper Telegrafo, approval rates are high for President Correa at an astounding 76%.

I personally have seen a sharp contrast in who follows Correa and who is against him… simply put, the “haves” are against him, and the “have nots” are for him. You know before you even ask the perosn often who they are for. It’s true he has instituted many programs that protect the rights of the working class.
