1 Necessary Vocal Skill for Life in Ecuador

There I was, my first day in Ecuador… while staying in the house of a friend… locked out in the street.

I had left the house to buy a water, and when I came back, the door was shut.

There was no doorbell (it was a poorer part of Quito) and knocking didn’t seem to do the trick.

You see, in Ecuador, as in everywhere in Latin America, folks have high walls surrounding their properties for security purposes so it’s not like you can just walk up to the front porch like in the States.

Finally, after 45 minutes, my friend appeared and looked confused… “why didn’t you just whistle?” he said.

Whistle, I can’t whistle… soon I learned his friends had a special whistle to identity when they were at the gate.

Whistling… a necessary skill in Ecuador.

How far is Cuenca to Salinas or Visa Versa?

Good question. From Salinas to Guayaquil is about 2 hours (in a private car)…then from Guayaquil to Cuenca is about 3 hours in a car.

How to Bring Money to Ecuador?

It’s best to bring a few hundred dollars in cash and two different ATM cards, that’s it… you can take out from down here, the fees are a $1-2 to the machine and another $2-3 to your bank every time you take out (so take out a lot at a time).

ATM machines are now everywhere in Ecuador, a few years back it was more difficult.

“Green” Laws Being Pushed through the Ecuadorian Assembly Now

New “sin” taxes will be instituted on cigarettes and alcohol if the current “green” laws get approved.

So the current low prices for beer (often under $1 a bottle) and cigarettes (usually under $2 per pack) will probably see increases in the near future.
