Anti-Monopoly Law Passed in Ecuador

A new anti-monopoly law was passed this week in Ecuador which supposedly will try to regulate the illegal monopolies that control specific sectors and it hopes to better protect Ecuador consumers.

But what it also does is give the State more power in controlling specific businesses deemed “essential” for the growth of the country. Small and medium sized businesses don’t look to be affected by the new law due to their relatively little influence over overall market prices in their niche.

Slow Gains in Telephone Penetration in Ecuador

According to the National Census Board in Ecuador, in 2010 only 33.4% of households had access to a land-line telephone, while in 2001 the figure was 32.2%.

Many have replaced their land-line in Ecuador for cellular phones, but truth is, both types of telecommunications in Ecuador continue to be expensive compared to North America.

Family-Size Changing in Ecuador, Effects on Housing Market

According to the National Census Board of Ecuador, the average family size in Ecuador hs decreased over the last decade from 1.8 children per home in 2001 to 1.6 in 2010.

Additionally, the % of married homes decreased from 35.86% to 32.5% in the same period. The divorce rate increased from 1.4% to 1.9%.

This confirms what I’ve witnessed locally here in the housing arket, that over the last few years the demand for suites (one bedroom apartments) has significantly increased as well as for 2 bedroom apartments as well whereas the demand for 3 bedroom places seems to have reached its peak.
