As a retired person in Ecuador, you got it good when it comes to paying taxes.
You could have a bank account in Ecuador, and receive your pension payments directly to that account, and you still would not be liable for any type of income tax because those earnings were officially made outside Ecuador.
Many Ecuadorians receive thousands of dollars a year from their relatives working abroad, and they as well are not liable for paying taxes on those “earnings” received from abroad according to current Ecuadorian law.
If you don’t engage in commercial activity in Ecuador, property taxes are the only taxes you would be liable for in Ecuador as a retiree (if you own property). But property taxes are a small fraction of what you are sure to be used to in the States or Europe. You may still want to have Michigan CPA help you file your property taxes. Most people on the coast pay under $300 a year.
Another plus of living in Ecuador is that there is no capital gains tax when selling your home, the transaction is considered as a personal buy-sell agreement between two people and the government does not try to get involved. (But for some of the municipalities that have experienced an influx of gringo investment, like Cotacachi, they will require you to pay a Capital Gains Tax based on the tax valuation of your property based on the value difference from the time you bought to the time you sold it.)
But there is a new up and coming tax that is not on the books yet, but could be soon, that would affect you if you hold assets in Ecuador over $200,000.
For people who own over $200,000 in assets, in 2009 a new law was passed stating that these people have to legally declare all their assets if they own more than $200,000 worth in Ecuador. It is believed that later on this information will be used to impose a 1% annual tax on their net holdings.
So this new tax may or may not affect you, but even so, I think you will find Ecuador “lenient” when it comes to taxes.
If the job of accounting is being outsourced, one must ensure to use the best umbrella company. A slight mistake can make a big difference thus one must be very careful and alert while working with the finance of a company.

A lot of people ask me how much it costs to ship furniture to Ecuador. My response to this is simply, why?
You can ship your furniture down, but why bring furniture from the States at all?
A move to a new country is a great excuse to get rid of all that old, decaying furniture in your house and start over anew.
And in Ecuador, the furniture are exquisite, fine pieces of handy-crafted wooden artwork rarely seen in the US, plus you can easily get a new furniture delivery to your door.
There are a lot of different things that a wooden pallets manufacturer will be doing for several industries. Every company needs to have a way to ship their finished product. They also need to have a way to receive their raw materials.
Pallets come in many different shapes and sizes. They also come from many parts of the world. The type of wood that is used to make them will vary greatly too.Pallets have many different purposes too like using for decoration,fuel. Many of them are made with wood that cannot be sold for construction or other products. It may have spots that are damaged but they can still support products. Some larger companies will rent pallets from companies to use. If they need to have a certain quality of pallet, they will need to find a company that can supply them what they need. There are many different grades of pallets.
The finished products will be stacked onto a skid. The size of the product will determine how many of their products will fit on each pallet. Some products are large enough that only one will fit on there.
Other times, smaller items are sold by cases. There may be several different items per case. There are many different products that can use a skid to ship them to the warehouses so that they can be sent where they need to go.
This is something that is very important. Pallets can be made with many different types of wood. Hardwood, softwood or a mixture can be used. Most manufacturers are going to use the wood that has been damaged and cannot be sold to consumers.
Every company has a lot of different options for pallets. When pallet manufacturers are making pallets, they need to take into consideration the sizes that their customers are going to need. Every company will order what they need.

You just have to know where to look. In Quito, go to the budget furniture outdoor market called San Roque. In Cuenca, you can try the outdoor markets on the weekends or one of the many small furniture stores dotted throughout the old town (Cuenca is known for it’s furniture manufacturing!). Floor preparation is everything, the pores in the concrete need to be opened up before the coating is applied. You can learn this here now about concrete sealing. floor preparation begins with removing oil stains and sealers or any other contaminates epoxy will not adhere to oil or other contaminates. the second step is grinding the top surface of the floor with a diamond grinder or a shot blaster to open up the pores. acid etching does not open the pores enough. You will also need a good vacuum because the dust is terrible and very dangerous to breath.The third step after the pores are opened is to clean the concrete with a vacuum and a leaf blower works great, you need to get the dust off the floor. Water is not a good idea unless you are going to let the floor dry for some time before coating as it will make the epoxy turn white. If you floor has cracks this is a good time to do any repairs and I will get into that later. Now your ready for epoxy and we recommend that you follow the manufactures directions on application techniques if you are going to do this yourself. Quito– Taxis are safe and helpful. It is perfectly OK to walk a few blocks or so at night with no problems except for around the tourist zone of the “Mariscal” and in the south of the city (the more ghetto part). In those areas stay in well lit areas and limit walking to a minimum.
Cuenca– This is a safe, small city where I have walked distances at night with no problems or worries at all. The center of the city is quite deserted after dark though, taxis are still a decent and cheap option.
Salinas– This small resort town is perfectly safe, you can walk around at all hours with no problems. Unless you have really bad luck nothing will ever happen to you.
Manta– The center of Manta around the port area and bus terminal are to be avoided on foot at night, but the outer parts are fine for walking, even at night.
Guayaquil– Guayaquil has the worst rep for safety in Ecuador, and with reason. It is not advisable to walk more than a block or two at night…even taxis late at night are not particularly safe (better to call a taxi service to come pick you up than catch a random one in the street). I love Guayaquil: but I’d say about 10% of people love it, 90% hate it, to each his own.

Small towns on the coast– The small towns in Ecuador have, small, pleasant, warm people that are safe and generally try to avoid conflict at all costs. (Some even leave their houses unlocked!)

I don’t think I have to spell out the enormous benefits of having a bank account in another country. For one, you can take money out of the ATM when in that country without paying fees. Deposit money and pay bills without having to transfer the money into the country every time; and not to mention, tax advantages with regards to your home country.
In Ecuador, you can get that offshore bank account you desire.
The problem is that a foreigner in Ecuador can’t get an account without a local ID card, given out when you are already a resident on one of the resident visas.
I know what you’re thinking…
“OK, but I just arrived, and not on a resident visa but simply a tourist one, so how can I get an account now?”
Here is the trick; avoid the big banks of Ecuador, with the stricter policies, and head for the smaller banks, there are several, preferably the ones whose main colors are green or red…
These smaller banks are much more likely to overlook their normal regulations and give you an account. (Most Ecuadorians view foreigners as high rollers and the banks are no different. Big banks already have their accounts, but the smaller ones are constantly on the lookout!)
If one banker turns you down, try a different branch of the same bank, where you may have more luck.
But, the easiest way to get an account in Ecuador in these smaller banks is to KNOW someone with an account in one.
Word of mouth referrals are king in Latin America, and if they are a current client, they can refer you, and the bank will often overlook their normal restrictions and open an account for you. So ask around and find someone (maybe even your real estate agent could help you out)…
In Latin America, not only the banks value highly word of mouth referrals, but the whole society. Million dollar deals are made daily between people simply based on their spoken word, their reputation and personal recommendations.
…It is easier than you think to meet people your first week down here, go to church, message people on Facebook, take a language class…
Then have them recommend you verbally in their (preferibly smaller, flexible bank) and that’s it, the account is yours.
Remember, it’s not necessary to have a contact, but it certainly helps.
