The suggested vaccinations to travel to the coast of Ecuador are quite expensive. What vaccinations are REALLY needed?

NONE. I havent gotten any except Yellow Fever and Im fine. I am a born and raised American who has been in and out of Ecuador eating street food for 6 yrs now.

I wouldnt even suggest Malaria protection unless you are planning to go to the Amazon part of the country because it is not healthy for your organism that stuff…

my 2 cents, dom

As Dom pointed out…none, however it would depend on your specific areas of concern, especially if you are susceptible or have any health issues which would necessitate vaccination. Talk to your doctor, but my wife and I have been coming back and forth and have now lived in Ecuador for 8 months with no issues.

Agree’d, None. Most common bug threat will come from the water and causes a tummy crankiness. A quick trip to any farmacia will help you manage and cure this ailment.

There are no vaccinations for Dengue Fever (virus)or the 4 serotypes (strains) of malaria.
During the past year, 8 cases of Dengue fever were reported in the Esmeraldas area. The figure is probably higher.
Malaria, as Dom states, is found in the Amazonas rain forest.
Anyone contemplating visiting the area needs to commence anti-malarial(s) at least 2 weeks prior to departure.
Another precaution: wear mosquito-proof clothing,long-sleeved, and douse yourself with DEET, 100% strength. (FDA research has shown that even at this level, DEET is non-toxic, and extremely effective).
Avoid still water – mosquitoes require still water for producing larvae. Mosquitoes cannot breed in running water, such as streams and rivers.
Also, you will not encounter any mosquitoes at 8,000 feet altitude and higher – this is their upper limit.
I am a medical microbiologist, specializing in tropical diseases. I perform ongoing investigation of diseases in Ecuador (probably the safest tropical country). I am highly motivated as I recently purchased 22 acres of jungle land, located about a mile from the sea, near the comuna of San Jose, central coast.
I have just finished the house plan, and when the house is constructed atop one of my hills, I will be relocating from the States.
I have been traveling The Americas for nearly 40 years. I lived in Panama City for quite some time, but the ex-pat invasion became intolerable. Otherwise, it is a wonderful country.
I have been traveling throughout Ecuador for decades, and it is now superior to any other tropical location.
