Agree with Dom, however if you want a data plan and to make sure it is all active go to Claro on Amazonas north of Plaza del Toros.. They are a huge store and techs on hand if there is an issue.. I got unlimited data and bought the phone time or recharges at the booths mentioned.. Make sure it all works and at that store in Quito I found the best help.

I agree with the above. However, should you have a US “quad” or “world” phone with Verizon, forget using it in Ecuador. It is an horror show.
Verizon says that their partner in Ecuador is the government.
I finally gave up trying, and bought a local phone, where minutes can be purchased nearly throughout Ecuador. Most petrol stations can provide minute cards, as many of the “tiendas” along the main highways.

You can get a SIM at any cell phone stand in Ecuador! Just look for Claro or Movistar, they both have their booths in all the major malls in the bigger cities.
The SIM costs around $5 and gives you an Ecuador number.
