Is Ecuador a safe country in which to live?

If it’s safe to buy property and reside in Ecuador, why is Ecuador considered one of the more unsafe countries in S.A. compared with Uruguay, Chile, and Argentina which are considered the three safest. Also, why is it that foreign travelers in Ecuador are advised not to take public buses or to rent a car and tour the country?

I take buses and rent cars all the time… really, I wouldnt buy almost anything the State department tries to feed you… if you do, youll never go anywhere (which may be what they want)…

And yes, I think Ecuador is a safe country although petty theft is more common, just like in any less affluent nation.

If its not tied down, and you leave it, its gone! Ifind that violent crime seems to be less than that of the States…maybe due to the restrictive gun laws.

Hmmm, sounds like the state department strikes again…typical CYA propaganda. Check out any other country too, my guess is…there is NO WHERE safe except the good old USA.
My wife and I live here and have never experienced any issues at all, nor do any of my clients when they arrive including single women. I have been coming here for years and renting cars the entire time, enjoying the driving and the sites. There are some areas that I would recommend you stay away from however that is everywhere. As Dom said, mostly petty crime and not so much violent crime than what is back in the USA. Some bus routes at night are more subject to possible stops and robbery and some areas in cities are not where I would want to be at night. If you think ahead and stay smart you will probably never experience a problem. Of course if you want to find trouble you can find that anywhere in the world too.

As is the case with most major cities around the world, Guayaquil and Quito have the typical crime problems associated with million plus populations. Yes there are isolated incidents of petty theft in smaller towns which is common when there are gaps between the haves and have nots. Use common sense and don’t leave your cell phone or camera sitting where someone could do a snatch and grab.
