I have returned from Ecuador

I have posted that I was going to Ecuador some months ago… Now I’m posting ’cause I have returned from there. :)

Hello all! I stayed in Ecuador for more than 30 days. I returned few days ago. My review is that: I loved it!

Well, some facts… I crossed border from Ipiales/Colombia – this is a small city (I was luck that I stayed in the Hotel Angosmayo, Believe me… this is a really very good hotel for a city like Ipiales).

I visited several cities in the sierra and just a few in the costa. I also stayed in Guayaquil and visited Dom hostal (on sep-27) but he was not there haha. I liked Ibarra, Cotacachi, Cuenca, Guayaquil, Salinas, Manta.

Ibarra is a nice city full of restaurants, cheap hostals, banks, ect. Maybe this is the cheapest city that I liked in Ecuador. Hehe I liked the $2.00 usd almuerzo.

Cotacachi is a very small city. I loved its restaurants. I stayied in the Arbolito Hostal – the owners are very friendly and they helped us a lot.

Cuenca is a good deal. Not too big not too small. Several restaurants, hostals, banks, etc. I liked the neigbor “Portal del Sol” neighborhood, the climate and the Tomebamba river.

Guayaquil is a big city not so diferent than others big cities but I really loved the Malecón 2000 (it is amazing), the big river, restaurants, plazas, Museos and “Las Peñas”.

Salinas, is so small that you only have the malecon avenue with infrastructure. The beach is good and restaurants is also good.

Manta is hot. They have a good night life. Hotels and restaurants is not a problem here… I liked the restaurant Mediteraneo. They have several private “ciudadelas” (condos) on the beach. The beach is good but the sand is not so good.

I also liked Bahia de Caraquez but they really need to invest a lot in the city. Several things really need to be improved here… better restaurants, hostals. I stayed in the Cocobongo hostal (owners are australian expats). I was saved by the Puerto Amistad and the restaurant del hotel de la Piedra. See, I really loved this city but I think I can’t live there ’cause I need services. I think this city is full of opportunities for people that can provide good restaurants, economical hostals, etc.

The worst citie was Puerto Lopes, haaaarrrg they have no infrastructure, no malecon, all streets are not paved, the restaurants are not clean and hostals are full of mosquitoes.

My review is that most of the cities in the sierra are betther, safer and clean than the cities in the costa.

Ecuador has really good roads for a 3th world country. I have not found any bad road – none in the sierra and none in the costa.

p.s.: This is the “I’m going to Ecuador” topic I have made before the trip. http://ecuadorrealestate.org/ecuador-forum/travel/im-going-to-ecuador/
