Can I get a decent 1 bedroom furnished apartment in Quito or Quayaquil for one month for $500.00? Would be great to have ocean front in Quayaquil but probably pretty expensive?

Is Master Card and or Visa accepted in Ecuador? If visiting for a month isn't it kind of risky to bring enough cash to last a month? What form of currency is recommended, traveler's checks or what?
