I do some online teaching on the internet – which theoretically can be done from anywhere with good quality internet access. Does this qualify as ‘work’ (for a visa) from an Ecuadorian standpoint?

To my knowledge, it does not, unless you are being paid in Ecuador to show the income on your Ecuadorian tax filings. This would be a good question for an attorney and to see how to set up a business that you could then utilize that income as a “business” for that purpose.

I do work for all kinds of companies around the world from Ecuador on a tourist visa all the time and I do not worry about it. Who is going to control how you use the internet? As Larry said the problem starts when you start receiving money from within Ecuador.
