hello, i am possibly interested in moving to coastal ecuador in 2013,somewhere near an area with lots of expats. i would like to buy a SMALL 1-2 bdrm casita under $50,000. i am a hairdresser\ barber and wish to stay self employed. i would like to provide mobile service, catering to whomever would like their haircut in their home. i realize that haircuts are SUPERCHEAP in ecuador, but i am confident that given time i can build a clientel of people who love my haircuts! my concern is what kind of visa do i need to do this legally? or can i even get one, because it might be one of those professions that would be considered taking a job away from an ecuadorian? i have been to ecuador twice in the 80′s for several months, and loved it. i know i would be happy there. but i definately have to work for at least 5 yrs until my pension starts at 65. any advise!!?? thanks… alison

Hi Alison, in your case Id get an investors visa, you can do so by investing $25k or more in a property or depositing $25k in a CD in Ecuador. Work visas would be out of the question if youd like to stay self employed. Dom

Check out the Bahia de Caraquez area, we have need and there is a growing expat community in and around there. Please remember that in order to get your visa for an investors by buying a home…it is the municipal value and not what you paid that will determine if you qualify…it has to have a value of %25,000 single, $26,000 couple. As far as working, once you have your visa (investors) for residency you can apply for a RUC and have a business as an individual but there are some hoops to jump through…best to ask an attorney to get up to the minute information. Here laws can and do change so its always best to inquire right before you need something.

I am not sure if there is a community on the coast with LOTS of expats. There are pockets here and there and it is definitely building, but it has just started in my opinion (maybe Montanita is an exception). On a different note, I pay $2 for my haircut :)
