Hi W, Playas is the sunniest beach I know of on the Ecuador southern coast. Inn the north, one place I see that has consistent sun is San Vicente near Crucita.

Late December is the sunny season on the coast until early April, the rest of the year is quite overcast. Dom

Would this long cloudy period apply to both the Playas and to the San Vicente areas?

NO, there are so many micro climates on the coast it is hard to say but no, the same climate and seasons do not apply to Playas and the rest of the southern coast, it is a bit different …

Thanks, Dom! If I might make a suggestion, why not do an article or a series of them highlighting some of the coastal towns and areas with their respective pros and cons–which you do so well–as well as their different micro-climates and other helpful details?

Dom – if by chance you read these posts, can you address the micro climate issue please?

I have lived in a couple of places that have similar weather characteristics, cold water and warm air, which create over-cast conditions along the coast where the cold meets the hot, for about half the year.

I know there are areas which get off-shore winds during part of this time and keeps the clouds to a minimum. Can you speak to this? Are you aware of any specific areas that are not subject to the cloud cover? Having lived in it for many years, I can tell you that it gets depressing.

Hi Sami, one of the sunniest beaches in Ecuador is Playas, which does in fact meet the ocean at an odd angle compared to the rest of the Ecuadorian coast. I’d try there. suerte, Dom
