I understand that bus and taxi transport is easily available but as a gringo I am used to being able to be mobile just by me. Are scooters, either electric or gas, available easily and what are the licensing requirements?

Hi Barbara, Dom is right and below is the registration process. Most of this is new for this year. Seems criminals were buying cheap scooters to use then abandoning them so……now here is the process…….
Registration works like this…..
1. Buy the scooter at the store of your choice.
2. Take the receipt and pay taxes on it. Wait for them to enter it into the system…2 to 10 days normally.
3. Take your receipts to the registration department along with your original factura (bill of sale).
4. Pay the registration.
5. Wait the amount of days for your placa (plate) and your new orange X styled vest that you must wear along with a helmet.
It took me three weeks to get all of this done for my wife’s scooter. I live on the coast and it may be quicker in the cities. Hope that helped.

Hi Barbara, yes, scooters and motorcycles are available starting around $700 … you’ll need a drivers license, from any country, and you’ll need to register the scooter. As far as insurance all you’ll need is the standard liability SOAT insurance which is around $10-40 a year.
