Thanks for the answers about fish. I didn’t ask about shrimp or crab. Are they available?

shrimp and crab are ubiquitous on the coast. there’s often a moratorium on them around january and february.

We live in the Yunguilla Valley area. Do you know if there is an area there to purchase fresh seafood?

Shrimp is one of Ecuador’s major exports, both wild-caught and farm-raised. It is the Pacific White Shrimp, and is the most encountered in the USA.
It is one of the most popular, delicious shrimp available anywhere.
I am a partner in a local (Guayas) shrimp aquaculture farm.
I also had a farming operation in Thailand. The most popular shrimp raised there was the Indian Ocean Tiger Prawn.
SE Asia was devastated last year, and much of the shrimp production was erased from the land.
To worsen matters, shortly following the exceptionally heavy rains and resulting massive floods, the area, including India, has been hit with the lethal White Spot Virus.
Ecuador was infected badly and extensively by White Spot years ago, decimating production. However, while White Spot Virus is omnipresent, the shrimp have been bred to resist nearly 100%.
SE Asia has now converted to White Spot resistant shrimp, with the Post-Larvals purchased from Latin America and the US.
A note of national pride: for decades, China was, by far, the largest farm shrimp producer in the world.
One year she was eclipsed, and Ecuador was the largest producer, that year. No small feat.
Aquaculture farms produce year ’round – no restriction as to time.

Every type of seafood you can imagine you can get here. We have our local fisherman bring our fish, shrimp, lobster, crab etc right to our door from his catch. We then go to our market to get some things he might not have. Along the coast seafood is the staple diet.
