I understand that the south part of the country has been troubled with more crime than the middle and northern areas. I am particularly interested in safety in the rural areas, as I will be looking for acreage near Cuenca or Cotacachi, or other city away from the coast. Is it safe for a single person (woman) in the country?

From what I have been hearing from people that live in and around Cotacachi, there has been some increase in crime there. I live on the coast so can only tell you what I know of the area of Bahia and north. I know of more than one single women that live, have businesses etc and they not only seem happy, but they tell us and it shows as they prosper. I personally know 2 women gringo business owners in Bahia de Caraquez that are single and in their 60′s.

BS!!!
There are 2 single women in our area that have been around for several years without any problems. One is over 70 and drives to Cuenca regularly(1.5 hours) without problems.The other is over 60 and travels all over Ecuador visiting all sorts of areas and loves the freedom to do so.
Yes you shouldn’t wear expensive jewlery and dress like you have lots of money but that is common sense.

I find Ecuador safe in most rural areas except of some places in the north (Esmeraldas). The only place currently approaching my tolerance when it comes to safety is Guayaquil.

I don’t have an answer yet. I’m 65, female and leaving for Quito Tuesday. People telling me just to be careful. When I lived in Southern Turkey I had to be careful too but never had any problems. I never wear Jewelry or flash money but then I wouldn’t do that in a lot of places either. I’m going to Cotacachi and to the coast to check out the country for the next 2 month.
