Dom, interesting/informative site you have, a few questions/opinions. My wife and children ( 5yrs twin boys) are looking for a area to base out of for a few yrs of surfing/immersion….What we are not looking for: Gated communities, private beaches, heavy Euro or Ex-pat communities where we have to hear “how the US/Euro is falling apart”, high -rise every 100 meters etc…(Costa Rica,Panama immed. come to mind)
What we are looking for, good surf for beginners/advanced, local community feel where we can interact with locals, basic ammenities preferred…Although we would like to be on the beach or w/in a few blocks…
I’ve spent time kayaking in the Ecuador interior/Andes and it seems that Ecuador has both to offer….Any towns come to mind that we should take a look at when we visit this yr?
suggestions/advice appreciated
Kelly

Hi Kelly…I am not Dom but hope you don’t mind my thoughts. The very best surfing areas are Montanita and Canoa. There are no such things here as “private” beaches. Montanita is very busy most of the time with all types of visitors, Canoa is smaller and more laid back. Not sure whether you are contemplating buying or renting but my recommendation would be Canoa rather than Montanita for either. If you are planning on home schooling then it doesn’t matter where you wind up, but there are decent schools in both places for the children if your plans are to immerse them into the culture.
Hope that helped some and others may have other opinions.
