Our move to Ecuador

Hi Domenick,
I have been receiving, with great interest, your emails for many months now. My wife and I presently have our home (Roseville, California) in escrow and expect it to close January 23rd. We are then looking to leave the U.S. and we are seriously looking to resettle in Ecuador. Since we are not familiar with the Country we would expect to rent initially. I understand you are active in real estate activities, so I am writing you in hopes of getting your suggestions, recommendations, advice, do’s and don’ts, etc., and/or even rental recomendations.

We desire to resettle outside the U.S. for many reasons, not the least, in search of a significantly lower cost of living than here in California. Our life long hobby has been as performing musicians. My wife has sung with many small and large choral groups for close to 50 years and I have had more than 70 years as a classical oboist and clarinetist plus playing for years in small ad-lib dance combo’s and Latin bands .

We would like to settle near or close to a sea shore (second best, might be near/on a lake shore).

Since music has been a life long hobby for both of us (although I retired from City Management and still hold a B1 California General Building Contractor’s license), where ever we light we must be able to continue our musical hobby. My guess would be to locate near, but not in, a large City or near a University setting.

Although I have a fairly good grasp of “Spanglish” (having had a time share in Mazatlan for 30+ years and an early California Castilian heritage), I am in hopes of tapping your knowledge re: where we might reach out for our wants in Ecuador and where we might initially locate near or around a few English speaking expats (at least till my wife becomes comfortable with Latin surrounding’s, shopping needs and new customs).

Lastly, I looked up crime in Ecuador and like Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua and Belize it reminded me of Oakland, Stockton, Vallejo, Watts and East L.A.—Help; please set me straight. Again, any help, etc. you may have to offer will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Bob Noren
