Find a Question:
Length of Stay on Visa

Hello….I’m new on this forum and have read thru all the Q&A’s – very informative! Coastal Ecuador is our primary interest. I’ve done research, and got stuck on the Visa requirements. We are in our late 50′s, not old enough to claim a US social security pension, we don’t have an annuity, but what we do have is cash. We are still young and healthy enough to try living in a totally new environment before we get too old and creaky to do so…
From what I gather, the longest we could stay in Ecuador over a 12-month period without purchasing property is 90 days, which could be extended to 180 days. Is this correct? I know that there is a $25K cash deposit we could do, but to me that is risky. We don’t want to start a business, all we want to do is relax in a beach rental for a year, and make our decision after that point as to whether we want to buy our own place or not. Is this even going to be possible? I have read and read again the Visa requirements, and can’t seem to find anything that will let us do this – without dropping $25K in the process.
Anyone else faced with this? To move to a country and then have to leave after 90 or 180 days seems pointless.

Hi Dez, the info you have is exactly correct, if you plan on staying over 180 days you will need some type of RESIDENT visa… work, study, investors or pensioners visa… thats it, thats the options.. or you could overstay your visa and pay a fine once leaving, but thats always a bit risky for most. saludos, dom
