OK it’s done we have booked our first (scouting) visit to Ecuador. 4 nights in Quito and 6 nights in Cuenca. Staying at the Hilton in Quito (free on points) but no such luck in Cuenca. Hotel Casa del Aguila has an excellent rating does anyone have an opinion regarding this hotel and the area it is in?

Thanks for the input MrNice, but we are only interested in the Sierras, if we do move there will be plenty of time to visit the other regions. But we only want to live in a cooler higher altitude.

Not sure about the hotel but if you like the sierras only a bit warmer than Cuenca (we find it too chilly for comfort)you might want to try a place that we love called Gualaceo. It is 30 minutes by taxi ($15.00) or an hour by bus ($0.25) out of Cuenca (and the bus rides are always interesting. If you are interested, let me know. We have a lovely 3 bedroom townhouse available to rent.

Don’t know what your time frame was/is. Casa del Aguila is a nicely refurbished colonial very close to downtown. If you’re into old world charm, it’s nice. If you want something more upscale and modern, the Hotel El Dorado is one of my favorites.

I have no idea about the hotel, but I feel compelled to tell you that Ecuador has 4 very diverse regions that are climatically AND culturally very different. With your itinerary you are limiting yourself to one only (sierra). You will only get know know a fraction of Ecuador and its people.
