Family with horses en route to Cuenca area

We have decided to live in the area of Cuenca beginning July 2012. We are visiting in March 2012 to find a rental property with room for horses.
My question is: it appears to me from my previous trips there that indigenous peoples’ type trails criss cross the rural areas outside of Cuenca, and are open not only to foot traffic but to horses.
In other words, private property does not close off these trails to non-owners. Does anyone know about crossing private property via such trails.
Thanks.

Ecuador is very lax on horse laws and you can often ride them anywhere humans are permitted to go… for instance, on the beach it is no problem to ride horses in Ecuador.
Just mount one and off you go.
