I understand that the south part of the country has been troubled with more crime than the middle and northern areas. I am particularly interested in safety in the rural areas, as I will be looking for acreage near Cuenca or Cotacachi, or other city away from the coast. Is it safe for a single person (woman) in the country?

I feel that yes, it is safe for a women in Ecuador. The men hiss a bit but are not nearly as agressive and forward as they are in other Latin countries, plus you re probably taller than most of them.
