If one wants to drive northward into Central America, are there safety concerns? Any advice or cautions? We’ve traveled a lot but not in this part of the world.

You can’t drive north from Colombia to Panama- no roads through Darien region. You would have to get your car to Panama City and drive north from there.

No roads to travel from SA to CA. Use caution driving to different countries as road conditions are ever changing, some for the better and some for the worse.
