I don’t currently own a cell phone, but I’d like to buy one in case of emergencies when I go back to Ecuador next March. What is the cheapest way to go? There is a Claro close to the condo. I would leave the phone in the condo afterwards for our next visit in the summer.
Would I be better off buying a phone in the US or Canada, then purchasing a SIM card (or whatever else???)

Buy your phone from Claro (in my opinion, the best) and then buy minutes to load the phone. Minutes are very easy to acquire – they are ubiquitous.
Do not buy the phone in the States – some are actually cheaper here, and perform as well.

Stow away your US phone and buy a prepaid Claro phone in Ecuador in one of the Claro client service spots (Centro de Atencion al Cliente). The reason why it’s better to buy it there as opposed to one of the many small third party shops that sell prepaid phone is that as the provider those guys can activate it for you on the spot and sort out any problems right away without you having to speak a lot of Spanish.
Price point should be around $50.

You can buy a cell phone in Ecuador or if you buy in USA or Canada make sure the cell is open to receive any SIM card you buy in that way you will be able to charge it with the minutes you will need, have a nice trip

Thank you for all your answers. I went to Salinas, bought a cheap phone (50$). It also came with some minutes. It was perfect. I left it in the private area of our condo for our next visit.

Best bet is to buy a rechargeable..they cost from $29 to $50 normally, then you can just recharge as needed…a minimum of $3 will get you some minutes. Then just use them and put the phone away till next time. Easy.
