What is the best credit card or bank to use in Ecuador for a atm withdraw. If staying for six months, Thanks

We use our Chase card and although get charged a $5 transaction fee (on any amount up to $500, so we only take out $500 at a time). If you have a resident visa or censo you can open a bank account in Banco Pichincha, or Banco de Guayaquil…two very good banks here. We use Pichincha and they seem to have more offices around the country than any other bank to my knowledge.
Hope that helped.

hey, You can take money out directly from your bank in your home country from ATMs in Ecuador if your debit card is connected to the Cirrus or Visa network. You can usually look right on your card for the logos, if they’re there, you’re good. Then it’s just a matter of finding ATMs with that Visa logo… in Ecuador 80% of the ATMs are attached to the Cirrus network proudly placing the Visa logo near the machine.

Before you leave ask your bank if your ATM fees can be reimbursed, my bank in the US reemberses me, but only if I ask them to.

hope that helps, Dom

Wow Larry, $5 is a lot, US Bank only charges me $2 on their end, plus usually $1 on the Ecuador side. Wachovia is the hands down top Latin America- US bank in the States in my opinion though, they just seem to be well connected down here, as is CitiBank.

I spent some time in Guatemala 5 years or so ago, and Bank of America was charging $20 per ATM use. That is NO lie.

P.S.
Dom, this thread reminded me of a post you made on your blog. I think you recommended people bring two ATM cards from the states which seems like reasonable advise in case one gets lost. Just curious if that means your bank was willing to issue you a second card on the same account?

The only thing I don’t like about Banco Pichincha is they are alittle to popular and therefore always really busy especially if you need to go into a branch. I have used Banco Guayalquil and Produbanco with good results. I prefer to wire an amount into my Ecuadorian account before I travel to Ecuador and than just use my Ecuador bank card…..either a I do a bank transfer which is around $30 for an unlimited amount or my Canadian bank has a deal with Western Union for $9.00 plus 1%.
