Can I get a decent 1 bedroom furnished apartment in Quito or Quayaquil for one month for $500.00? Would be great to have ocean front in Quayaquil but probably pretty expensive?

As for Quito, you can usually find one bedroom suites furnished in the north for around $300-350 a month. Unfurnished for a bit less.

As Dom has said, not that difficult to find up to $500. You might get a decent view of one of the coastal rivers but no ocean to see in Guayaquil.

Brief excerpt from the book Culture Shock: Ecuador. The author claims Quayaquil more expensive, but it was published a few years ago.
“The best areas (Guayaquil) for expatriates are Los Ceibos, Puerto Azul, Santa Cecilia and Los Parques. Urdesa may still offer options, although it has become rather commercial and less residential of late. My favourite is El Barrio Centenario.”

I think Guayaquil has come down in price due to the crime rate. Quito has an abundance of decent rentals as well. For $500 you will get something really nice.

Yes you can easily find a one bedr for $500, I am currently renting a one bedroom in a nice place in Guayaquil for $200 a month.
