Air Conditioning on the coast of Ecuador

I have read nothing about air conditioning along the coast of Ecuador. I am especially interesed in the area around Jama and Bahia. Can it be found in rentals on the coast? Can you add a/c if it isn’t in the house initially? Thanks you.

I don’t know about adding A/C to a coastal rental house, but we looked extensively at condos for sale in the area around Manta & Bahia, and there were A/C units in all the newer buildings, and some of the older ones as well. (And we loved the area and ended up purchasing, too.)

Hi nanclev, you’ll be surprised, along the coast AC is really not necessary most of the time, it is quite cool in Ecuador, usually around 70-75 degrees.

At night, it’s often comfortable to sleep wrapped in blankets.

Yes, you can get AC centrally installed in your house or buy portable AC machines any handyman can fix into your wall.

See you down here, Dom

Hi Nanclev;

As a builder we wire our homes to use split A/C systems. 220 volts and up to as many BTU’s as is necessary. Each of these systems work very well, and its nice to have them in the main areas and the bedrooms for sleeping. Window units are also available. I would be very careful about using central as that would necessitate hollow areas for ductwork which would be breeding grounds for mold/mildew, especially along the coast. When we build a home we use solid concrete and a lot of times this includes the roofing structure. The coast is very breezy which makes it nice as Dom said and AC is more about removing humidity than anything else. We rent a condo and since its not ours, we bought portable 12,000 BTU units, 110 volts and they cost about $500 each. They work well and being portable its easy to just roll them where you want them, although you have to vent them and drain them. Let me know if you need any other answers about A/C.
