A new anti-monopoly law was passed this week in Ecuador which supposedly will try to regulate the illegal monopolies that control specific sectors and it hopes to better protect Ecuador consumers.

But what it also does is give the State more power in controlling specific businesses deemed “essential” for the growth of the country. Small and medium sized businesses don’t look to be affected by the new law due to their relatively little influence over overall market prices in their niche.
